The surface of my paintings is a space on which objects are collected and thereby given significance. I incorporate objects and forms, which are symbolic but whose symbolic content is unrestricted and dynamic. I am interested in exploring the process of imbuing inanimate objects with symbolic power-- a seemingly human necessity to instill objects with multiple, and sometimes competing, energies. In my most recent work I have been focusing on the problematic nature of desire. My ambition is not to objectify desire, but to use painting as a means to explore ideas about desire, and to use object-symbols to explore themes of sexual identity and sexuality. |
