In 1998, I made the decision to pursue my interest in ceramics. This was the year I joined antfarm.
This was also a period of transition and frustration; my experience with clay was still quite limited and I knew I had a lot to learn. Antfarm offered me exactly what I needed: a flexible, inexpensive studio space, a community of peers exploring their interests in art, and exposure through open houses and group exhibitions. In my two years at antfarm, I improved my skills, attended numerous classes and workshops, made connections within the clay community, and began to understand how I could evolve into and sustain myself as a ceramic artist.
Without my experience at antfarm, my relationship with ceramics might have been more difficult to nurture and sustain. However, since setting up my first studio five years ago, my interest in clay has broadened and diversified. In January 2000, I left antfarm to spend two years as a core student at Penland School of Crafts in western North Carolina. Currently, I am in my second year of study as a candidate for a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
