figurative work:
This series of paintings were completed at the International School of Art in Montecastello di Vibio in Umbria, Italy. In Fall and Spring a residency program offers artists an opportunity to work without distraction and once a week visit Florence, Rome, and Asissi.
The paintings are influenced by reading Inferno, the first book of The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri and intensive lifedrawing, four hours a day fours days a week. They are enlarged directly from small life drawing studies that were intentionally chosen for their particular mood of self-struggle and introspection. Dante is guided through hell by Virgil, and during the course of his journey is constantly questioning, and coming face to face with the relationship between the past and the present, the fates of historical figures, and his own quest for spirituality and understanding. These paintings represent a journey. They reflect the history and essence of Italy in their sculptural approach and inverted landscapes, as well as the questions we ask and the search for those improbable answers.
